League of Legends · pre-game coach

LoL Coach quick start

LoL Coach gets your rune page ready as soon as you lock in your champion, builds a game plan for your matchup, and shows it in small overlays while you play. It reminds you of key timings, tracks your CS, and reviews your game afterwards.

Setup: about 5 minutes Needs: Windows 10 or 11 Cost: free with a Gemini key

Setup

  1. Install

    • Download LoLCoach_x.y.z_x64-setup.exe from the releases page.
    • Run it. It installs for your Windows user only, so it doesn't need administrator rights. If Windows shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway. This happens because the app isn't signed with a paid certificate.
    • LoL Coach starts when the installer finishes. You'll find it in the Start menu afterwards.

If nothing opens on an older Windows 10 PC, install Microsoft's free WebView2 Runtime and try again.

Updates: the app checks for a new version when it starts and asks before installing it, never during a game. To check yourself, open Settings → Updates, or choose Check for updates from the tray menu.

  2. Add a free AI key

The Settings window opens the first time you run the app.

    • On the Setup tab, keep Gemini (free tier) selected.
    • Click Get a free Gemini key, sign in with a Google account and create a key. You don't need a credit card.
    • Paste the key into API key and click Test connection. You should see "Connected".
    • Click Save.

The app now runs in the system tray as a blue "C" icon near the clock. You may need to click the ^ arrow to see it.

  3. Set League to Borderless

In League, go to Settings → Video → Window Mode and choose Borderless. The overlays can't draw over Fullscreen mode.

During a game

The in-game overlays are see-through and click-through, so they never block your clicks. You can move them with Ctrl + Shift + M.

Champ select

Runes ready before the game loads

As soon as you lock in your champion, the runes window shows the client's recommended page and summoner spells, and sets both in the client. Once every pick is in, they're tuned to the whole draft.

Runes are saved as a page called LoL Coach. Spells you already have keep their keys, and junglers always get Smite. On the loading screen the app checks every champion's real lane, and fixes the plan if it guessed a lane wrong.

Only what matters now

The game plan changes on the game clock: laning until 14:00 (when turret plating ends), then mid game until 25:00, then late game. Press Ctrl + Shift + L for the Build and Matchup pages.

The plan is written for your role: junglers get a first clear, gank timing and ward spots; laners get a trade pattern, wave plan and all-in window; supports get a lane pattern, vision plan and roam windows.

The CS tracker shows your CS, CS per minute and how you're doing against a target. Pop-ups at the top of the screen, read aloud, remind you of these:

Aphelios: Laning (to 14:00)

  • Trade only with Lulu nearby

A review and one thing to work on

About a minute after the game ends, a Review appears. It shows your key stats, what went well and what to fix, how you did against the plan, and one focus for next game.

That focus is added to your next game plan.

Your rune pages are safe. The app only creates or replaces the page called "LoL Coach". If you already have as many pages as your account allows, delete one or rename one to "LoL Coach", and the app will use it.

Tips

See more of the gameSettings → Overlay has sliders for the background and text opacity.
Set your own CS targetSettings → Coaching → Target CS per minute. Leave it at 0 to use a default for your role.
Tell it what you knowSettings → Coaching → Standing notes is sent with every plan. You could write "I struggle against poke" or "Patch 26.19 removed item X".
Get a natural-sounding voiceSettings → Notifications → Voice type: Natural → Download voice (about 85 MB, once), then click Test voice.
Too chatty? In Settings → Notifications you can turn off reminder types, change the voice or its speed, or switch voice off and use a beep instead.
Your focus carries overYour last review's focus, and your improvement plan's top priority, are added to your next game plan.
Gank warnings are predictionsThey're based on typical jungle paths. Read them as "be ready", not "it's happening".

Troubleshooting

The overlay says "Waiting for the League client…"
Open the League client. If League is installed somewhere other than C:\Riot Games, go to Settings → Coaching → Client lockfile and choose the lockfile file in your League folder.
There are no overlays in game
Set League to Borderless (setup step 3). Press Ctrl + Shift + O in case you hid them.
The runes window didn't appear
It appears once you've locked in your champion. If you closed it, it comes back in the next champ select.
"No free rune page"
Delete one of your rune pages, or rename one to "LoL Coach".
Hotkeys don't work while League is focused
Update to version 0.3.1 or later, where hotkeys work without tabbing out. If they still don't, right-click LoL Coach in the Start menu, choose Run as administrator, and try again.
"Couldn't build the plan"
Check your key with Test connection in Settings, then press Ctrl + Shift + P to retry.
"High demand", "limiting requests" or "daily limit … used up"
Gemini's free tier allows only a few requests per model each day (as few as 20), and it's often busy. The app automatically tries the backup models in Settings → Setup, which each have their own quota, and daily limits reset at midnight Pacific time. For more headroom, set up an Other provider in the same tab: Groq, OpenRouter and Mistral have their own free tiers, and a model on your own PC (Ollama or LM Studio) has no limits. Tick "try my other providers" to use it as a backup.
No review after a game
Reviews skip remakes and modes other than Summoner's Rift. Otherwise, choose Review last game from the tray menu.
Windows or my antivirus blocks the app
The app is unsigned, not harmful. Choose More info → Run anyway, or add an exception for LoL Coach in your antivirus.

Reporting a problem

The app keeps a log of what it did and any errors in lolcoach.log. It contains no API keys. Your settings, history and log are in %APPDATA%\LoLCoach, and Settings → Updates shows the exact folder.

If something goes wrong, right-click the tray icon and choose Send log to Discord. A message appears on the overlay when the log has been sent. If it says no Discord link is set, paste the link you were given into Settings → Coaching → Discord link for logs.
